Air Pollution Control and Energy Recovery System design services

We provide professional air pollution control and energy recovery system design services across the UK. Specialists in scrubbers, bio-filters, oxidisers, carbon adsorption and integrated energy efficiency for industrial emission control.

Expert air pollution recovery system design

We design and specify complete air pollution control and energy recovery systems for industrial applications. Our engineering team offers comprehensive design, specification and performance evaluation services to help clients meet environmental legislation while improving process efficiency and reducing operating costs.

We guarantee the integrity and reliability of every design we deliver, from fume capture through to emission abatement and energy optimisation.

Comprehensive Design Services

We cover the full spectrum of air pollution control system design, including:

  • Scrubber, Adsorber, Bio-filter, Oxidiser and Solvent Recovery system sizing, specification and selection
  • Control and documentation: P&ID, FDS, control philosophy, general arrangements, commissioning schedules and technical report generation
  • Emission characterisation and testing: Gastech analysis, olfactometry arrangements, smoke testing, flow measurement and problem definition and generation of more sophisticated analysis for a third-party emissions testing specialist
  • Project engineering and supervision: design vetting, site supervision, commissioning, performance testing and troubleshooting
  • Tender management and documentation review for proposal and product design

Our process begins with a detailed site survey to assess emission sources and characterise the pollutants involved. We then design cost-effective, reliable containment systems, specifying the most suitable end-of-pipe abatement technology for tender and installation.

We can manage procurement and installation of all components, including fans, ducting, electrical systems, controls and abatement units including full system testing and certification.

Proven Air Pollution Control Technologies

Our design work typically focuses on proven, high-efficiency air pollution control technologies, tailored to the client’s process and emission profile. However, we have been involved in R&D work relating to novel gas treatment systems and are always willing to consider new technologies as they be viable (usually via pilot trials).

Wet Scrubbing Systems

Wet scrubbers use aqueous or solvent-based liquors to transfer contaminants from gas to liquid via mass transfer.

We commonly design:

  • Counter Current Packed Tower (CCPT) scrubbers: ensures high mass transfer efficiency through counter-current flow.
  • Venturi scrubbers: ideal for gas streams with particulate loading or slurry-based liquors, achieving up to 90% single-stage removal efficiency.

Bio-filtration Systems

Bio-filters use microbial activity to degrade organic contaminants within a moist media bed. Modern designs incorporate continuous irrigation, counter-current flow and passive media configurations to maximise reliability and efficiency. Downstream polishers can be included for enhanced performance in high efficiency targets (e.g. odour control) .

Carbon Adsorption Units

Activated carbon adsorption systems remove contaminants through electrostatic attraction and surface adhesion, deep with the media pore structure.

We design single or multi-bed units for VOC or odour control applications, with empty bed contact times optimised for both removal efficiency and carbon life. Impregnated carbons are specified where chemical reactivity is required for enhanced performance.

Thermal and Catalytic Oxidisers

Oxidisers destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through thermal or catalytic oxidation:

  • Thermal oxidisers operate at 750–900°C with destruction efficiencies >99%.
  • Catalytic oxidisers achieve effective conversion from 180°C upwards.

We design both recuperative oxidisers, using shell-and-tube exchangers for 50–80% heat recovery and regenerative thermal oxidisers (RTOs) with ceramic heat storage media delivering up to 96% thermal efficiency and potential autothermal operation at VOC levels of 2000–3000 mg/m³.

Integrated Energy Recovery and Efficiency

Following the COP26 framework, modern environmental design places greater emphasis on energy efficiency and recovery within air pollution control systems.

We design abatement systems that are energy-optimised by default, incorporating:

  • Waste heat recovery and reuse
  • Low-loss ducting and fan design
  • Energy-efficient control systems
  • Renewable and intra-process energy integration

We also conduct energy surveys of existing air pollution control installations, identifying opportunities to improve system efficiency, recover waste energy and reduce operational carbon footprint, even where the abatement plant is already in service.

Trusted UK specialists in air pollution recovery systems

With decades of experience in industrial emission control and environmental engineering, we deliver bespoke, compliant and cost-effective solutions for clients across manufacturing, chemical processing, waste treatment and energy sectors.

If you require a new air pollution control system, energy recovery integration or performance optimisation of existing equipment, we can help you achieve both regulatory compliance and energy efficiency goals.
